Photographs made by James Watson, a museum staff member at the State Historical Society of Wisconsin, showing railroad rolling stock and opening day activities on May 26, 1962, at the Mid-Continent Railway Museum, Hillsboro, Wis., which moved to North Freedom, Wis., in 1963. Images also include views of the living quarters at the Mendota State Hospital redecorated to their appearance at the turn of the twentieth century when the institution was known as the Wisconsin State Hospital for the Insane.

The Wisconsin State Hospital for the Insane opened in 1860. It was built on a site near Madison purchased by commissioners of the Wisconsin State Lunatic Asylum (authorized in 1854 but never constructed). In the 1930's the institution began to be known as the Mendota State Hospital and in 1973 it became the Mendota Mental Health Institute.
